History of Newlands Local Enterprise Limited
NLEL – developing an enabling environment to help social enterprises become better businesses.
Newlands Local Enterprise Limited was born out of the Newlands SRB (Single Regeneration Budget) programme in 1999. ‘New lands’ is a name created by the representatives in the community. They were invited together from 6 local housing estates in the north of Bradford, to determine how the social and economic programme was to be spent. Representatives of the estates of Fagley, Bradford Moor, Thornbury, Greengates, Rravenscliffe and Thorpe Edge formed the Newlands Partnership who were responsible for delivering a social and economic programme of £17.1m over a seven year period. Newlands Local Enterpise Project (NLEP) was one of approximately 80 projects that were delivered. We successfully delivered the SRB funded project and have since delivered projects funded by ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) and NRF (Neighbourhood Renewal Fund). We have continued successfully to support the development of community business and social enterprise in our community.
In September 2002 we became a company limited by guarantee and have continued to provide promotional, advisory, information and support services that fosters economic activity which is of broad community benefit, and which directly involves members of the target communities.
Our primary aim is to develop community-based businesses providing sustainable local services and jobs. We assist social enterprises in developing business plans, funding strategies, marketing plans, market research, feasibility studies, organisation structures, legal structures and sustainable futures.
